My daughter loves St. Patrick’s Day. At 6, she fully believes in leprauchans and pots of gold at the end of every rainbow.

And who am I to tell her otherwise, really?

While, we don’t do much to celebrate the day in our house other than make some pretty amazing grown up macaroni and cheese and chocolate frosted cake, I thought adding a little Irish themed fun to her math lessons this week would be a great way to keep things interesting.

One of the things we’ve been working on during her homeschool kindergarten year is number recognition.

While, yes, we do flash cards and things like that to promote memorization, that gets boring pretty quick for her.

She does however love to color and paint, so these color by numbers work to reinforce number recognition.

Color by Number for Sight Word Recognition

Another basic part of her kindergarten curiculum is recognizing sight words, including the names of the colors.

Just like with math and number recognition, flash cards get stale fast. But, learning to recognize color names through a color or paint by number activity has been so much more successful for us!

It keeps her engaged and it makes learning feel fun for her, which I’ve learned is a key to homeschool happiness over here.

Turn Color by Number into a Fine Motor Skills Activity!

You could turn this St. Patrick’s Day coloring printable into a fine motor skills activity by having your little one color it and then it cut it out along the lines. Then they can put it back together like a puzzle. My daughter loves doing things like this and it’s a fun way to gain some cutting practice.

Unleash their Inner Artist!

Another fun idea for color by number pages: vary your materials.

Yes, crayons and markers are fun, but you could get creative and have your child glue bits of torn construction or tissue paper to fill in the different colors as well.

She also loves to color with Do a Dot paint markers, watercolor pencils and pastels. I let her choose and she always is picking a different medium and experiment!
