There’s nothing as good as fall and holiday season baking.
Give me a gray, chilly day and something pumpkin in the oven making my house smell cinnamony and sweet any day over the blazing summer sun.
Sure pumpkin itself is fall-ish and festive, but it definitely doesn’t have that sweet, spicy taste and smell that goes hand and hand with flannel shirts and sweater weather.
That enticing flavor and aroma?
It’s all pumpkin pie spice, a cozy blend of warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice.
Sure you can buy a little teeny jar of pumpkin pie spice the same way you could buy apple pie spice and get a pumpkin pie out of it, or you can make your own pumpkin pie spice recipe.
If you like to cook and bake, you probably have everything you need in your pantry.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make homemade pumpkin pie spice:
- Ground Cinnamon – This makes up the base of the spice and is also one of the most common one used.
- Ground Ginger – Ginger gives the pumpkin pie spice just a little bit of almost sweet, earthy flavor.
- Ground Nutmeg – This earthy, hot spice helps add warmth to the blend.
- Ground Cloves – Ground cloves play a big role in making pumpkin pie spice, adding additional flavor notes and a bit of heat.
- Ground Allspice – Probably the hottest spice in the bunch, this adds that little bit of bite to the pumpkin pie spice blend.
You will not need any equipment for this (unless you plan to ground your own spices).
All you need are some measuring spoons, a small bowl, and a fork.
How to Make Our Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe
1. Measure the spices and add to a bowl.
This is where it gets really tricky, measure out each spice and add them to a bowl.
If you insist on grinding your own spices, you can, but it is just much easier to use pre-ground spices instead.
2. Mix the pumpkin pie spice blend.
Use a fork or small whisk to fully blend the spices together.
Once blended, you can add them to your favorite recipes, like pumpkin pie, pumpkin cakes, or pumpkin hand pies, or store the blend in a small container.
This recipe makes enough pumpkin pie spice to use in several recipes.
Serving
Well, you don’t really serve pumpkin pie spice as a meal or snack on its own.
This is more of a make it and put it into other recipes that call for it or store it for later.
We do not recommend just eating it right out of the container.
Recipes to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice
While eating out of the container is definitely not recommended, we DO recommend that you run – not walk – to your kitchen to make one of these pumpkin spice recipes with our homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe:

Storing
Pumpkin pie spice is incredibly shelf-stable and will last as long as any of your other spices when stored in an airtight container.
We often just use an empty spice container that we clean out and thoroughly dry.
This recipe makes enough to make several different baked goods, so it makes sense to make it at the beginning of fall baking season and pull it out as necessary.
If you have any left over at the end of the fall or baking season, you can just store it in a dry place for next year.
Tips and Tricks
- Short of purposefully or accidently dumping in too much of any one spice, this is a very hard recipe to mess up. If you do want to tweak the flavor, you can add or subtract very small amounts of each spice to get the flavor you like. An 1/8 of a teaspoon is a good place to start when making adjustments.
- `You can add in sugar to the spice blend if you like. This turns it more into a pumpkin pie spice sugar and may be good to add on toast, oatmeal, or other recipes that call for cinnamon sugar combinations. But keep in mind, most recipes that use pumpkin pie spice don’t need the added sugar, so only add some if you intend to use it only for toppings and recipes that do call for it.
- If you want it to be a little more on the spicy side of pumpkin spice, you can add a pinch- about a scant 1/8 of teaspoon- of ground black pepper.
- Make sure the container you use to store the pumkin pie spice blend is clean and dry. If there is any moisture in the container, it can cause the spice to clump up and may shorten the shelf life of the spice blend.
