Is there anything more summery than a nice cold glass of lemonade?
I could see an argument for homemade iced tea… but really lemonade is the drink of summer.
My oldest loves lemonade and we also regularly go blueberry picking.
So it seems like a natural combination to make this semi homemade blueberry lemonade recipe.
It uses the best of summer to make this really pretty (hello pink!) non alcoholic drink.
And it’s so refreshing that it’s the perfect way to beat the heat.
Plus the kids love it because it makes them feel special to have a “fancy” drink sort of like this frozen strawberry lemonade we can all enjoy!
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make blueberry lemonade:
- Lemonade – Yes, you can use your own homemade lemonade recipe if you have one but to keep this effortless we use storebought light lemonade. Make sure you use light lemonade or a low sugar lemonade because the blueberry simple syrup adds a lot of sweetness and regular lemonade is already pretty sweet. 52 ounces of light lemonade
- Blueberry simple syrup – A 1 to 1 combination of blueberries, sugar, and water cooked until the blueberries burst.
That’s it!
You do not need any fancy equipment for this recipe, but you may find that you want:
- a clear plastic pitcher to mix and serve the blueberry lemonade in
- resealable container to store the lemonade if you make it ahead or have leftovers
How to Make Blueberry Lemonade
1. Make the blueberry simple syrup.
To make the blueberry simple syrup, you can follow this recipe for all the details but the gist is very easy!
Just combine equal parts blueberries, water, and granulated sugar in a pot over medium low heat.
Let the sugar dissolve and bring the blueberries to a simmer so they release their color and burst before straining the syrup to remove the bits of blueberry.
It’s good to do this ahead of time so the simple syrup to cool on the counter or in the fridge before using.
2. Mix the lemonade and simple syrup.
Pour your lemonade into a large pitcher or container.
Now this part is super important: pour the blueberry simple syrup into the lemonade and give it a quick stir with a spoon with a long handle.
Just pour the mixture into some glasses with ice and enjoy!
Variations
- Mix in another juice, like cranberry, cran-raspberry, or other favorites to give the lemonade an even fruitier taste.
- If you’re not serving it to very small children (we have a 2 year old), you could garnish the drink with fresh blueberries right in the pitcher or glass.
- Sub in a different simple syrup or add one in on top of the blueberry simple syrup, such as this or raspberry simple syrup or even vanilla simple syrup. Just keep in mind, the more simple syrups you add, the sweeter it will get.
Storing
You can definitely make blueberry lemonade ahead of time for a party or just as a drink to serve your family all week.
To store, simply mix it in a sealable container or use a pitcher with a lid and place in the fridge.
It should stay fresh for about 4 to 5 days.
FAQs
What does blueberry lemonade taste like?
Blueberry lemonade is a bit sweeter than classic lemonade due to both the natural sugars in the blueberries as well as the sugar in the simple syrup added to the recipe. You will also catch a slight hint of blueberry flavor. It is definitely not over-powering.
What does lemon juice do to blueberries?
When you add a splash of lemon juice to blueberries, they get a bit brighter and you may notice the flavor pops a bit. In blueberry lemonade, the blueberry simple syrup changes the color of the lemonade and cuts down some on the sour flavor of the lemonade.
Tips and Tricks
- Put ice into the individual glasses instead of the pitcher. This helps prevent melting ice from watering down the lemonade. This is particularly important if you plan to make it ahead or think you will have left overs.
- You can make blueberry lemonade up to about 5 to 6 days ahead of when you need it. You can also store and serve it on demand for the kids or yourself.
- To make it fancy, slice a lemon into large wheels, cut them into quarters, and then place the wedge on the rim of the glass. You can also add some blueberries to float in the drink.
- Use blueberry lemonade in place of regular lemonade in Easy Boozy Lemonade Slushies or even in Boozy Strawberry Lemonade Slushies.
