Chocolate dipped orange slices might just be my newest obsession.
Sweet, tangy, and dipped in chocolate and they make me feel fancy without actually doing anything fancy.
Every bite is a little party in your mouth.
So of course that makes them perfect for putting out at your holiday parties along with your other sweet treats.
With its combination of rich dark chocolate and bright citrus, I promise, one slice is never enough.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make chocolate dipped candied orange slices:
- Small Oranges – We use smaller oranges to help make it easier to fully dry the orange slices in the oven. They also hold together a bit better for smaller circles.
- Water – You will need water from the tap. You could go fancy with filtered water if you like, but plain water from your faucet works fine.
- Sugar – You will need granulated sugar for candied orange slices.
- Chocolate – You can use milk, dark, or semisweet chocolate chips. You can use bars, but you may want to chop them up a bit before melting to make it easier.
- Coconut oil – Coconut oil helps thin the chocolate out when you melt it so it goes on smoothly.
- Decorations – Optionally, you can use colored sugar, sprinkles, or other small candies to help add some color and decorations to the dipped candied oranges.
You probably already have everything you need on hand to make these orange slices, but you will want to pull out your:
- Sharp Knife
- Cutting Board
- Parchment Paper
- Cookie Sheet
- Large Sauce Pan
- Measuring Cups
- Tongs
- Cooling Rack (optional)
How to Make Chocolate Dipped Orange Slices
1. Candy the orange slices.
Set a pot of water with sugar to boil.
As it heats, thinly slice your oranges into about 1/4 inch thick slices, leaving the rhind on.
If you prefer, you could remove the skin first, but you do not have to.
The rhind will get a bit chewy during the candying process and have a bit of sourness to it.
Carefully place the orange slices in the water and reduce heat so it simmers with the orange slices.
They will need to simmer for about 45 to 60 minutes or until the white part becomes translucent.
Carefully remove the oranges from the sugar water and set on a cooling rack or parchment paper.
2. Dry the candied orange slices.
Set your oven to 200 degrees and pop the oranges into the oven.
Bake for 2 to 4 hours or until they are a bit tacky but set feeling.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes.
3. Dip the orange slices in chocolate.
In a microwave safe bowl, add your chocolate and coconut oil.
Set your microwave for 30 seconds and remove to give it a stir.
Continue microwaving for 30 seconds and stirring until your chocolate is smooth with no lumps.
You can now dip your candied orange slices into the chocolate.
You can do this several ways, including fully submerging or just dipping part of the slice in the chocolate.
As soon as you dip a slice, if you want to add sprinkles, sugar, or flaky sea salt, add it as you go.
Continue until all your slices have been dipped and you have run out of chocolate.
Let the oranges rest at room temperature until the chocolate has set.
Serving
Chocolate dipped orange slices can help fill out a festive holiday dessert spread.
You can serve the candied orange slices along side chocolate chip cookies, candies, or your other holiday treats like Santa Hat Brownies.
Storing
Place chocolate dipped orange slices in an air tight container and store on the counter for up to 4 to 5 days.
You can also place them in the fridge to extend their shelf life.
But if you do put them in the fridge, let them come up to room temperature before serving so the chocolate is not as hard.
Tips and Tricks
- For more tips and tricks on making candied orange slices, follow our original recipe here.
- For a sweeter orange, remove the peels. You can also dip the freshly dried oranges in sugar to give them a sugary coating.
- A cooling rack is not required, but it does help the oranges dry out in the oven faster.
- Half dipping the candied orange slices gives it the classic look with the beautiful contrast between the dark brown of the chocolate and the vivid orange but if you are a chocolate lover, go ahead and dip them all the way in. Just use a candy spoon or two forks to let the extra drip off.
- Don’t skimp on the drying time. Moisture is chocolate’s enemy so not drying the orange slices well will make dipping them difficult.
- Want to experiment with flavors a little more? Forgo sprinkling the chocolate with sea salt or sugar and try chili powder, cinnamon, or coconut flakes.
