One of the things I adore doing with my kids, especially my 6 year old, is making fun baked goods.

You get the point, right?
I love making easy treats they can help me with. And Goose loves doing it. She pretends all the time that she’s competing on a cooking or baking show so it tickles her when I give her some ingredients and have her help me put together a food craft like this.
Ingredients and Materials
- Cupcakes– I use box mix to make the cupcakes. The point of this project isn’t so much baking the cupcakes but decorating them to look like sweet little egg nests for Easter so no need to go for a scratch made cupcake. Use your favorite mix or if you don’t care about cutting corners, your favorite from scratch cupcake recipe. Bake them and let them cool completely.
- Buttercream– Use your favorite recipe for vanilla buttercream or you could save yourself the time and use storebought frosting instead.
- Edible Easter Grass– I found this in the seasonal section of Target by the Easter baked goods. You can also order some here. If you can’t find any, feel free to skip the Easter grass and dye your buttercream green.
- Peeps– Use the traditional chick shaped Peeps over the bunny shaped ones for this project since we are making birds nest cupcakes.
- Candy eggs– Variety is the spice of life. I used the mini Robin Eggs, Reese’s Piece eggs and Hershey’s eggs. Something for everyone.
Non edible supplies you might want to have on hand include:
- Cupcake liners– I like to use bright colors for this project but there are fun spring and Easter ones like these grass liners available as well.
- Piping bag– It makes it easier to frost the cupcakes.
- Piping tips– If you are using the candy Easter grass, you can use any tip you want. But if you want to make a frosting nest instead, use Wilton’s Grass tip.
How to Make
Here’s how to put these cute Easter Peeps cupcakes together. These directions assume you have prebaked your cupcakes prior to starting the project.
- Frost the cupcakes.
When you frost the cupcakes, less is more. Normally, I like to pile the frosting on but you just want enough to cover the surface of your cupcakes here unless you are using the frosting to pipe the grass and skipping the edible Easter grass. In that case, use more frosting.
Arrange the grass in a circular pattern so it looks like a bird’s nest.
Cut some of the edible grass using kitchen sheers. Arrange it in a circular pattern so it looks like a nest. Pieces of the grass will stick out, and that’s totally fine. You can snip the stray ends if you want or leave them wild. Keep the grass in place by pressing it gently into the frosting.
Decorate with Peeps and candy eggs.
Place a Peep chick in the center of the “nest” and then decorate with candy eggs. Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t over frost the cupcakes. You want an even coat, but not a huge fluffy layer of frosting if you are using the edible grass.
- Don’t worry if the frosting is messy. It all gets covered up.
- If you don’t want to use the grass candy, dye your frosting green with a couple drops of green food coloring and use Wilton’s grass tip to pipe a nest on.
- Let your kids have fun! The project is pretty easy, but they may need a little help with the grass, especially if they are younger. Make sure to precut it for them.
- Store in a large container on your counter. They should last about 5 days.
