Is there anything more fun than sprinkle coated cookies?
Be honest.
I sure can’t think of anything.
Granted I am not currently fully caffeinated.
But even if I was… these are so cute.
And my kiddos had a blast rolling the cookies in sprinkles.
Since I’m using premade dough, even my very excitable 4 year old and my toddler got in on this project..
And they all had fun eating the efforts of their work!
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
These only need 2 ingredients so they are super easy to make! You just need:
- Sugar cookie dough– We have done this with both the Pillsbury sugar cookie dough slice and bake rolls and the pre cut bake and go Pillsbury sugar cookie dough. You could also use your favorite homemade sugar cookie dough or even this pumpkin spice sugar cookie dough.
- Sprinkles– Obviously. You need a full jar of sprinkles. More on sprinkle options in a minute.
You only need basic kitchen tools and supplies like:
- Cookie sheets
- Foil
- Spatula
- Shallow bowl
- Cooling rack (optional)
How to Make
1. Roll the cookie dough into balls.
Whether you are using homemade cookie dough, a roll of cookie dough or the presliced dough, you still want to roll the cookie dough into round, equal sized balls. For the roll of dough or homemade dough, using a cookie scoop will help you get equal sized cookies.
2. Flatten the cookies.
Gently press the cookie dough balls down with a cup or a measuring cup.
3. Dip the cookies into the sprinkles.
Dip the top and sides of the cookies into the sprinkles, pressing them down so the sprinkles stick into the dough. Don’t dip the bottoms. Put the dipped cookies on a cookie sheet, spread about 3 inches apart.
4. Bake the cookies.
Bake the cookies in a 350 degree oven for 14-17 minutes. Once the cookies are set in the middle and starting to get golden brown edges, remove them from the oven. Let them cool and enjoy!
What kind of sprinkles should I use for sprinkle sugar cookies?
You’ve got so many options!
It doesn’t matter if you use sanding sugar, jimmy style sprinkles, nonpariel style sprinkles or even little shaped sprinkles.
Plus using different sprinkles is a fun way to update these cookies for different holidays, seasons, and occasions.

FAQS
How do I get the sprinkles to stick to sugar cookies before baking?
When you roll the cookie in sprinkles, make sure the dough is not super chilled so the dough is slightly sticky. This will sort of glue the sprinkles to the cookies. You can also lightly press the sprinkles into the cookies. If you need to chill the dough, chill the dough AFTER you sprinklefy it.
Do you sprinkle sugar cookies before baking?
It depends. If you plan to use icing on your cookies or are making cut out sugar cookies, then you will sprinkle them after baking. For these, you roll them in sprinkles first and don’t ice them.
Won’t the sprinkles melt?
While I have not tried every single kind of sprinkles out there, we did use long jimmy style sprinkles, little round nonpareils style sprinkles, small flat heart confetti sprinkles, and colored sanding sugar. They all held up beautifully and created super pretty sprinkle sugar cookies.
Tips and Tricks
- Only roll the top and sides of the cookies in sprinkles- leave a part blank for the bottom of the cookie.
- While you don’t have to gently flatten the cookies it creates a much more uniform cookie and it allows you to get the ultimate sprinklage. If you press them, you can press more sprinkles on top after you flatten them.
- If you don’t flatten the cookies, they puff up and are a cakier consistency.
- You will need more sprinkles than you think- We used 1 6.7 ounce jar for 24 cookies.
