If there is one thing my kids can all agree on, it’s pizza.
What goes on the pizza may be a different story, but if we suggest pizza, we know each of them will eat and be happy for a few minutes anyway.
My daughter is currently all about focaccia bread pizza.
And I can’t say I blame her.
Focaccia pizza is somewhat similar to sheets of Sicilian pizza you’d see in your local pizzeria.
It’s got the same thick style crust.
The result is a beautiful combination of traditional pizza flavors on a richer crust.
It’s the ultimate in Italian inspired comfort food.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
The number of ingredients you use for focaccia bread pizza can vary based on what you like to top your pizzas with.
Here’s the basics of what you need:
- Focaccia Bread -You can follow our focaccia bread recipe here if you want to make your own. You can also see if your local bakery sells it.
- Tomato Sauce – When we make focaccia pizza, we use our own basil tomato sauce, but you can use your favorite recipe or store bought. You can also top it with alfredo sauce, pesto sauce, or a lemon pesto sauce.
- Fresh Mozzarella – We love the flavor of fresh mozzarella, but you could use other types of mozzarella cheese instead. You can also top it with different Italian style cheese, like asiago, provolone, parmesan, or Romano.
- Additional Toppings – Here’s where you can go nuts. My family prefers pepperoni, but I like mushrooms and broccoli, or just simply some fresh basil. You may also want to add onions, peppers, sausage, meatballs, or other classic flavors. But I’ll be buried in the cold ground before I recognize pineapple as a valid pizza topping choice. Sorry, not sorry.
Some kitchen supplies that can help you make foccacia bread pizza include (but aren’t manditory):
- Pizza Stone – This can give the bottom of the bread a crispy texture.
- Pizza Cutter
- Spatula
- Grater – Only if you plan to grate your own cheese.
How to Make Focaccia Bread Pizza
1. Preheat your oven.
Seems obvious, but you really don’t want to put your focaccia pizza in a cold oven.
We tend to use our oven’s preset “Pizza” option, which you can do too if yours has it.
If not, we recommend high heat or 450.
2. Prepare your pizza.
If you plan to use a pizza stone, place your focaccia bread on a flat surface you can easily slide the pizza off of.
If you plan to use a cookie sheet, you might want to line with aluminum foil and give it a quick spray of non-stick spray.
Or if you just baked our focaccia bread recipe, you can make your pizza right in the same pan without taking the focaccia out first.
Once you have your focaccia in place, start loading it with your toppings.
Typically – in case you have never assembled or seen a pizza before – start with your preferred sauce.
Next? CHEESE!
After that, feel free to put whatever toppings you like on the focaccia bread pizza.
Except pineapple. You can f*ck off with that.
3. Bake your pizza.
At higher temperatures, the cook time will be typically between 5 to 10 minutes.
If you are not sure how hot your oven gets, you probably want to check the progress at 5 minutes and judge from there.
Your pizza is done with the cheese is melty and bubbly and your toppings start to singe.
If you’re like me, you’ll put it under the broiler for a few minutes to really melt the cheese and get a good carmalization on top.
Use a knife or pizza cutter to create square slices of focaccia pizza.
Serving Focaccia Pizza
Focaccia bread pizza is best served fresh from the oven.
You may want to let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving to let the cheese set a bit.
You can serve the pizza with a side of garlic bread.
It also pairs well with a side salad.
Storing
If you have left overs or just want to make it ahead, you can store the focaccia bread pizza in your fridge for about 3 to 5 days.
When storing, allow it to cool and then either cover the pan with plastic wrap or cut into smaller pieces and place in air tight containers.
When you are ready to eat it again, you can either pop it back into a warm oven until it heats through or place in the microwave for a few seconds heating until it is warmed through.

Are focaccia pizza and Sicilian pizza the same thing?
Sort of. Sicilian pizza crust is very similiar to focaccia crust with its higher hydration and thicker style than traditional pizza.
Is focaccia bread good for pizza?

What is the difference between focaccia and pizza dough?
Focaccia bread dough uses more yeast and more water than pizza dough. The result is a dough with a higher rise.
Tips and Tricks
- Cooking methods: A pizza stone will give the bottom of the focaccia bread a decent crispiness. Cooking it on a cookie or sheet pan makes it easier to cut and serve. For a more deep dish style pizza, you can prepare it in a deep baking dish which allows you to make it really saucy and cheesy without losing it in the oven.
- How hot your oven gets will determine your cook time. The higher the temp, the shorter the bake time for your pizza. If you are using a pizza stone, make sure it is in the oven BEFORE you start to heat it. They need to heat up and cool down slowly to avoid damage.
- Top the focaccia pizza with your favorite toppings, such as: pepperoni, cheese, more cheese, additional cheese, sausage, peppers, onions, meatballs, and so on.
- If you want to add fresh basil, add it after it is done baking. This helps to prevent it from wilting and turning bitter in the oven.
- Focaccia is a softer bread, so you may want to plan to eat larger slices with a fork. Smaller slices should hold together alright enough to pick up and eat.
