If you plan to make apple pie, you’ll want apple pie spice.
And if you’ve shopped lately, you’ll know that the little container you can get at the store is a bit pricey for what you get.
Our homemade apple pie spice recipe produces almost five tablespoons of spice and uses some common spices that you can get at just about any major grocery store or big box store or price club and might even already have in your pantry.
And unlike the store bought apple pie spice, you can customize the proportion based on your likes.
For example, many blends have cinnamon as the predominant spice in the blend followed by a little less nutmeg than cinnamon and then smaller but equal amounts of the other spices.
I’m only lukewarm on nutmeg.
So in this recipe, we still use nutmeg but are using it in the same amount as we are using the other non-cinnamon spices.
That’s how I personally like it.
But the beauty of this, is you can do you, boo.
Adjust the ratios of spices til your little heart is content and this blend will be, well, the apple of your eye.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here are the spices you need to make homemade apple pie spice:
- Cinnamon – If you don’t have cinnamon, you might as well get the heck out! But yeah, very common spice, you can find just about anywhere.
- Nutmeg – A slightly spicier flavor, you can get this anywhere you find cinnamon.
- Cardamom – OK, probably the least common spice on this list. You can find it at big box stores, like Target, or grocery stores.
- Allspice – This adds some heat to the apple spice blend.
Other than measuring spoons, you do not need anything fancy for this recipe.
How to Make Our Homemade Apple Pie Spice Recipe
1. Measure the spices.
Here’s the first challenge.
Use measuring spoons to get the correct amount of each seasoning.
Add them all to the same small bowl.
2. Mix together.
Use a spoon, fork, or small whisk to mix the spices together.
Place in a jar to store or use in your favorite recipe that requires apple pie spice or similar blend.
Serving
For legal reasons, you really should not just eat a tablespoon of this.
You will have a bad time.
However, you should add this apple pie spice to your favorite recipes, like:
Storing
If you have a clean spice container, you can use that to store the apple pie spice.
Otherwise, any small container with a sealable lid will do.
This is a great make ahead recipe because it uses only shelf-stable ingredients.
Store it like any other spice or herb in a cool, dry environment.
And whatever you do, don’t get it wet and don’t feed it after midnight.
You probably won’t like what happens if it eats after midnight.
Tips and Tricks
- If you like, you could make this into a sweetened version (like a cinnamon sugar mix). Add in a tablespoon of granulated sugar and mix it throughly. This goes well on buttered toast and other things you want to add a bit of spicy sweetness to.
- You can adjust the amounts of each spice if you like. Keep in mind, each is an earthy spice with a bit of heat. Allspice is probably the spiciest, so make sure to add them with caution as they can become over-powering.
- I’ve run out of tips. You really can’t screw this up unless you a) try to sniff it b) try to eat a tablespoon all at once.
