Easy Pinecone Gnomes DIY Gnome Ornaments
Easy pinecone gnomes are adorable ornaments and baubles to hang throughout the house over the holiday season or all winter long. Just a few materials needed and no sewing skills required to make these easy diy gnome ornaments.

I am super into the gnome craze.
They are just adorable and I love making them, coloring them, painting them, and putting them everywhere in my house.
And these adorable diy pinecone gnome ornaments are totally my jam.
Super Christmasy if you want them to be but also super easy to make more wintery.
Adorable on the tree or anywhere in the house!
This is such a fun and easy pinecone gnome craft to make.
Materials
- Pinecones– You want long pinecones like these.
- White acrylic craft paint
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Yarn– To either make a beard or embellish the hat with a Santa like brim. This thick wool yarn works well.
- Fabric– I like using felt to make the hat. You could also use Christmas socks.
- Wooden beads– To turn into noses.
- Other decorations and embellishments of your choice– I like jingle bells, florals, ribbons, but whatever you want! Get creative!
How to Make Gnomes without a Sock
1. Paint the bottom half of the pinecone white.
Dip the bottom half of the pinecone in white craft paint to make the beard. Let it dry.
2. Cut out your fabric.
Determine how much fabric you need by wrapping the felt around the pinecone as shown.
Then, cut the fabric in a rounded triangle shape as shown. You want the fabric piece to be large enough so that it will wrap around the circumference of the pine cone. If you are using a sock skip ahead to the next step and follow the instructions about gluing into place.
3. Glue the fabric.
Glue the fabric into a cone shape to make the hat.
Then decide which side of the gnome you want to be its face.
Glue the hat in the back but leave space in the front unglued for the nose.
4. Attach the nose.
Hot glue a wooden bead to the pinecone in the middle of the face area so that you will be able to also hot glue the hat in place over the nose. Arrange the bead so the hole is on the top and bottom of the bead and not on the front. Pull the hat down a little and glue the hat over the bead.
5. Finish the hat.
You could leave the hat sticking straight up, but I prefer curling the hat downward towards the gnome face.
Just tie the felt off with a piece of twine, bend it, and glue it in place.
6. Embellish and decorate!
Add any decorations you want to the hat. In this gnome I’ve added a little bow, a jingle bell, and some holly.
I also added a pompom to the end and glued a piece of thick yarn around the brim of the hat to make it look like a Santa hat.
7. Add an ornament hook and display!
I hang these diy Santa gnome pinecone ornaments on my Christmas tree. I just stick an ornament hook through the string that I used to tie the hat off.
FAQs
Can I use a sock for the pinecone gnome’s hat instead?u003cbru003e
You can absolutely use a stock instead! To do it, you’ll want to use a crew sock (I like Christmas ones) and put it on the pinecone so it covers about half of it. Glue it in place. Cut the end off of the sock where it bends and tie a bow on to hold the cut end together.
Will the pinecones decompose?
Eventually. But we are talking years here. Fun fact: pinecones can stay on a tree for up to 10 years so they have a pretty long life. If you are using ones you have collected yourself from outside though make sure you follow bake them in a 200 oven to kill anything that might be living in it. What can I use to make a gnome nose?u003cbru003e
I love using wooden craft beads. While I prefer using medium to large, you can really use any size.
Tips and Tricks
- You can make beards with fur or yarn but it definitely makes it a little harder and you loose some of the pinecone look.
- Be careful working with the hot glue so you don’t burn yourself. They make finger protectors that you can find here and I highly recommend them!
- Have fun with embellishments and decorations! You can find so many cute miniature items to decorate these gnomes with. Mini candy canes, tiny Christmas trees, etc. The sky’s the limit!

Equipment
- Hot glue gun and sticks

- Ornament hooks
Materials
- Pinecones
- White acrylic craft paint
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Yarn
- Fabric like felt or Christmas socks
- Wooden beads
- Other decorations and embellishments of your choice–jingle bells florals, ribbons, pom poms, twine, but whatever you want! Get creative!
Instructions
- Dip the bottom half of the pinecone in white craft paint to make the beard. Let it dry.
- Determine how much fabric you need by wrapping the felt around the pinecone.
- Cut the felt into a rough cone shape.
- Glue the felt into a cone shape.
- Then decide which side of the gnome you want to be its face. Stick the pinecone, unpainted side up, into the felt hat. Don't glue it into place yet.
- Glue on the bead for the nose and glue the hat to the top of the bead to secure it in place. Glue the back of the hat into place as well.
- Tie off the end of the hat.
- Fold the hat and glue into place. Add a puff ball if desired.
- Embellish and decorate as desired. I've finished this guy off with a bow, bell, and some yarn to make fur around his hat.
- Stick a hook in through the twine and hang.
