Elegant and Easy Prosciutto Caprese Skewers
Easy Prosciutto Caprese Skewers are an elegant prosciutto appetizer for any occasion from the holidays to casual summer gatherings. These pretty caprese skewers with meat will impress anyone and instantly dress up any event!
I am a huge fan of easy when it comes to putting things together to serve to company.
And my kids are huge fans of anything on a stick.
So I serve up lots of skewers like these.
You don’t have to cook, just thread some ingredients together and you have a pretty prosciutto appetizer that will impress even the pickiest of foodies.
And they are pretty and elegant enough to serve before Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years but since they don’t need you to actually cook, they are perfect for for warm weather entertaining too and would be lovely for Easter, Mother’s Day, or a casual summer gathering Barefoot Contessa style.
What is Prosciutto?
Prosciutto means ham in Italian.
It’s made from high quality pork legs and salted so the moisture is drawn out.
Prosciutto crudo is uncooked but cured so it is safe to eat.
Prosciutto cotto is cooked.
You’ll find it sliced into paper thin almost translucent slices.
While you can eat it on its own, most often you’ll find it as an accompaniment the way it is used in these prosciutto bites or wrapped around something.
What does Prosciutto taste like?
Prosciutto has a delicate sweet flavor that mixes with a salty flavor and richness from the fat.
Some varieties that have aged for a longer time have a very complex, deep flavor.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
To make these you’ll need:
- Prosciutto– A full package. You can normally find this in the specialty cheese case near the deli in the grocery store.
- Fresh mozzarella– Go for the mini mozzarella balls. You can also find this in the same specialty cheese case.
- Cherry tomatoes
- Fresh basil
- Balsamic glaze– Balsamic and honey
From your kitchen you’ll need:
How to Make
1. Assemble the skewers.
Thread the tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and prosciutto onto the toothpicks, using one tomato and one piece of mozzarella per toothpick.
2. Make the balsamic glaze.
Whisk the honey and balsamic vinegar together in a small sauce pan on the stove. Cook it over low heat, whisking often, until the glaze reduces and coats the back of a spoon. Drizzle the glaze over the skewers.
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers either on a plate tightly wrapped in foil or in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Keep in mind that when you refrigerate tomatoes, the texture won’t be as nice.
FAQs
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! You can assemble them ahead of time and refrigerate them prior to serving. Keep in mind the texture of the tomatoes won’t be as nice after you refrigerate them and don’t make the glaze until just before serving.
What wine pairs well with prosciutto caprese skewers?
You want a more acidic wine with these. For white wine, pinot grigio would work well. If you want a red wine, go for a nice Tuscan Chianti. A dry rose and even Prosecco would also be good choices.
Tips and Tricks
- To skewer the prosciutto, I found rolling it and folding it worked the best.
- You could use a larger skewer and make this more kebab sized.
- Don’t want the balsamic glaze? Serve them with basil walnut pesto, lemon pesto sauce, traditional pesto with pine nuts or drizzle olive oil onto the skewers.
- It doesn’t really matter what order you put the ingredients onto the skewer.
