We like it hot in this house.
By that I’m not talking about anything dirty (get your mind out of the gutter will you?).
I’m talking about our food.
The spicier the better.
We make a lot of buffalo-ized meals, and we always make our own buffalo wing sauce recipe as a coating because there is not a single bottled jar of sauce that compares.
And we’d know.
We have tried them all.
You can use it on wings, chicken tenders, breasts, and vegetarian options, like cauliflower.
Plus, a buffalo wing sauce recipe is as easy to make as a hot wing rub.
Just need about 4 ingredients and 5 minutes.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
You do not need much to make our buffalo wing sauce recipe and you probably have most of these on hand already:
- Frank’s Red Hot – Because you put that stuff on everything! Sure, you can use any cayenne pepper-based hot sauce, but why would you want to?
- Butter – You could use butter alternatives if you like. We have used olive oil with similar results, but the richest flavor comes from butter.
- Minced or Crushed Garlic – The secret to the sauce is fresh garlic minced or crushed. This adds some flavor to the heat. If you aren’t a fan of the texture the garlic adds, use garlic powder though it does change the flavor.
- Salt – Optional. It can help bring out some flavor in the sauce.
You won’t need much for this easy recipe, but you will want to pull out your:
- small pot
- garlic press
How to Make Buffalo Wing Sauce
1. Melt the butter and saute the garlic.
In a small pot, melt the butter over low to medium heat.
Once it melts, add the crushed or minced garlic.
Saute for about 1 to 2 minutes or until it becomes fragrant.
Make sure the heat is not too high to avoid burning the garlic.
2. Whisk in the hot sauce.
Remove from heat and whisk in the hot sauce, stirring until well-combined.
If you had stored the hot sauce in the fridge, you may want to leave over heat for about 1 minute or until it has warmed through completely.
Serving
You can use this buffalo wing sauce recipe to top your favorite wings, like oven baked or grilled wings.
You can also use it to top chicken breasts, drumsticks, or other chicken recipes.
If you like, you can dip fries in it or use it for Easy Buffalo Cauliflower or Instant Pot Buffalo Cauliflower.
Storing
To store buffalo wing sauce, pour cooled sauce into a mason jar or similar air tight container.
It should stay fresh in the fridge for about a week.
To use in your favorite recipe, reheat gently over low heat on the stove top or in the microwave.
Don’t freeze the sauce.
Tips and Tricks
- Butter adds a bit of creaminess to the buffalo wing sauce, but you could use butter alternatives. Olive oil is another good alternative for butter for a slightly lighter buffalo wing sauce.
- For a smoother sauce, you can use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. To do this, you can skip sauteing the garlic in butter and instead just mix it into the melted butter and hot sauce.
- The salt is optional. Give the wing sauce a taste before you add it.
- For additional flavor, you can add in more seasonings, like paprika or chili powder.
- If you prefer a different hot sauce, you can use other types, but this will alter the flavor and the heat level of the buffalo sauce.
- To make it a little sweet heat, add a few tablespoons of honey to the butter before you stir in the hot sauce.
