My kids love hanging out in the kitchen with us.
And they also love pizza.
The youngest also requests bagels all the time.
Well my 90s raised millenial self pretty much was raised on Bagel Bites.
They were a serious childhood delicacy.
Will my dear children eat them?
Nope.
I don’t know about your kids, but two of our three kids won’t touch pizza with sauce.
And frozen, premade pizza bagels are swimming in sauce (not to mention it tends to burn the roof of your mouth when you eat them, but that is a different topic).
We started making mini pizza bagels at home because, well, our kids can’t complain if they assemble their own pizza bagel.
With minimal effort, you can get your kids fully invovled in the making of these yummy snacks as an afternoon snack or a quick weeknight dinner.
Everyone’s happy, whether you want sauce and cheese, no sauce and just cheese and pepperoni, just sauce, or a fully loaded pizza bagel.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here is what you need to make mini pizza bagels:
- Mini Bagels – You can use whatever variety you can get at your local store or bakery. Of course, if you do not have access to mini bagels, regular bagels work just fine.
- Sauce – You can use your favorite variety of sauce, make some fresh sauce for the pizza bagels, or use left overs. You could also make them interesting using other sauces, like a homemade buffalo sauce, BBQ sauce, or other fun sauces.
- Mozzarella Cheese – For traditional flavor and ease, we use pre-shredded mozzarella cheese. You can also use an Italian blend, parmesan cheese, provolone, or other cheeses for the bagel pizzas. If you plan to make a buffalo or other version, you may want to use cheddar or other similar varieties.
- Toppings – Our kids love pepperoni, so we got the mini pepperoni for the pizza bagels. You can use full sized pepperoni if that is all you can find. You can also use popular toppings, such as mushrooms, broccoli, cooked sausage, meatballs, or any other topping you have on hand.
You will want to get out the following tools:
How to Make Mini Pizza Bagels
1. Preheat the oven.
Set your oven to 400 degrees.
Pull out a cookie sheet and spray with nonstick spray.
You can also line it with foil or parchment paper if you desire.
2. Prepare the pizza bagels.
Especially if you are involving your kids, it can be helpful to have all the ingredients you plan to use in an easy to access place.
Cut each bagel in half and arrange them on your prepared cookie sheet.
Spoon on as much sauce as you like on top of each bagel half.
Sprinkle as much cheese on each bagel as you want. (Yes one of my kids is likely adopted as he didn’t want any cheese on his pizza bagel)
Finally, add your toppings to the bagels.
You can assemble them to however each of your children or adults want them before baking them.
3. Bake and serve.
Carefully place your cookie sheet into the preheated oven.
Set a timer for 7 to 10 minutes.
The pizza bagels are ready when the cheese has melted and starting to bubble and brown.
Remove the tray from the oven and let rest for about 2 minutes before serving.
Serving
Serve the mini pizza bagels fresh from the oven.
You can top with seasonings, like red pepper flakes, oregano, or more parmesan cheese, or eat them as is.
You probably do not need a fork or knife to eat them, but if you do not want to use your hands, you will need a knife to cut them.
Storing
If you make more mini pizza bagels than you can eat, they store very easily, making them perfect homemade bagel bites.
You can also store them in the fridge for a few days.
In either case, make sure to store them in an air tight container before freezing or placing in the fridge.
To reheat, place frozen or cooled mini bagel pizzas into an oven heated to 400 degrees.
The cooled ones will need about 10 minutes while the frozen may take closer to 20 minutes.
Periodically check them and remove from the oven when the center cheese is hot and bubbly.
Tips and Tricks
- Either spray with nonstick spray or line your cookie sheet with wax paper to help prevent sticking and to make clean up easy.
- If serving as part of a party or get together, arrange the ingredients in bowls for easy use by all your kids or guests.
- The process of making mini pizza bagels and full sized pizza bagels is basically identical. You may need to cook the full size bagel pizzas for a just a bit longer, but otherwsie, the oven temp and process are the same.
