Look, I’m not a ketchup and mustard on my burger kind of gal.
I’m a “Let me slather this in barbecue” kind of gal.
And also, I kind of believe that burgers exist to be a vehicle for toppings.
These BBQ burgers, for example, are slathered in homemade honey barbecue sauce and topped with breaded onions.
I’d also possibly pile on Sauteed Mushrooms and probably a bunch of pickles.
But you don’t have to do it.
The combination of the seasoned homemade burger patty, barbecue sauce, cheese, and onions is a flavor bomb in the best way possible.
It’s super delicious and so easy!
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here is what you need to make simple but delicious BBQ burgers at home:
- Ground Beef – You can use whatever type is your favorite. You will want to shape them into roughly 1/4 pound burger patties.
- Burger Seasoning – You can make your own following our burger seasoning recipe, get a premade blend, or skip it entirely.
- Fried Onions – We often get French’s Fried Onions, but you can use your preferred variety.
- Cheddar Cheese – Cheddar is a go to for our barbcue burgers, but really you can use whatever cheese you prefer or skip it if you want to make someone cry.
- Buns – Relatively obvious, but you can also do bunless burgers if you prefer.
- Extras – Make them extra good with some crispy oven baked bacon, sauteed mushrooms, or any of your favorite burger toppings.

How to Make BBQ Burgers
1. Prepare and cook the burgers.
If you are starting with a premade patty, you can skip the prep work here.
If not, then you want to divide your burger meat into roughly 1/4 pound balls and then flatten them into patties.
Preheat your grill pan over medium to medium high heat.
Sprinkle each side with burger seasoning and then carefully place the patties onto your hot grill pan.
Cook the first side for about 2 to 3 minutes and then flip and cook the other side for about 2 to 3 minutes.
For well-done, cook the burgers on each side for about 4 to 5 minutes.
2. BBQ sauce and cheese it up.
When the second side has finished cooking, carefully pour your barbecue sauce over each patty.
Next, add the fried onions and finally, top with one to two slices of cheddar cheese.
You can turn off the heat and place a lid over top of the burgers to help the cheese melt, leaving them covered for about 1 to 3 minutes or until the cheese is well melted.
Place the burgers on buns, top with additional BBQ sauce and other toppings before serving and enjoying.
Serving
BBQ burgers pair well with some of the ussual suspects, like:
- potato chips
- fries
- sweet potato fries
- a side salad
- corn on the cob (find out how to cook corn in its husk here)
- coleslaw
- Easy Tomato and Onion Salad with Vinegar
- potato salad or sweet potato salad
- cucumber and tomato salad
Storing
You can store cooked burgers for about 2 to 3 days in the fridge an in air tight container.
You can also freeze cooked or uncooked burger patties (as long as the beef is fresh when you make the patties).
Allow them to thaw and then reheat on the stove top or in the microwave.
Keep in mind, if you store fully prepared burgers, the onion straws will likely become soft, losing their crunch.
Tips and Tricks
- For added flavor, you can mix the burger seasoning and even some of the barbecue sauce right into the burger meat before forming them into patties. This helps give the burgers amazing flavor throughout.
- If you plan to make these BBQ burgers ahead of time, cook the patties and then store them before adding any of the sauce, cheese, or onion straws. When you are ready to eat them, you can reheat them on the stove top and then add the toppings once they have warmed through.
- Cook the burgers to your desired doneness level. For rare, cook each side for 2 minutes. For medium, cook for 3 minutes on each side. For well-done, cook each side for 4 to 5 minutes. These times can vary based on the thickness of your patties. Thicker patties will need longer cook times for similar results. Roughly, each patty should be between 3/4 to 1 inch in thickness.
