Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
You really only need one ingredient and some spices for our simple burger recipe, but we are going to include some suggestions for toppings too:
- Ground Beef – We often use ground sirloin, but ground chuck or other varieties work well too.
- Spices – For seasoning, we use our homemade burger seasoning which is black pepper, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. For added heat, you could mix in a bit of crushed red pepper.
- Burger fixings – Buns, sliced cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, etc. This is all optional and based on your preferences.

How to Make Our Simple Burger Recipe
1. Prepare the ground beef.
Put the beef in a medium mixing bowl.
Measure out your spices and pour them on top of the beef.
Using your hands (you can use food handling gloves if you like), mix the seasonings into the beef until well combined.
2. Cook the burgers.
For roughly 1/4 pound burgers, divide the ground beef into roughly equal quarters.
Using your hands, form each section into roughly bun sized patties.
Heat your skillet over medium high heat.
Place each patty on the skillet and cook for one of the following times, flipping halfway through:
- About 4 minutes for rare (internal temperature of 120-125 degrees)
- 4 to 5 for medium rare (internal temperature of 130-135 degrees)
- 6-7 minutes for medium (internal temperature of 140-145 degrees)
- 7-8 minutes for medium well (internal temperature of 150-155 degrees)
- 8-9 minutes for well-done (internal temperature of 160 degrees plus)
Well-done is the safest option, but you can prepare them to your desired level of done.
Once they have cooked to your desired level of done, remove from heat and place a slice of cheese on top of each to make cheese burgers if desired.
To help the cheese melt, place a lid over top.
The steam from the burgers will melt the cheese within a minute or two.
For an oven option, see below.
3. Build your burgers.
If you like, remove your burgers from the skillet and then place the buns on the skillet.
Toast them for about 1 to 2 minutes or until they start to brown on the inside.
Keep a close eye on them so they do not burn.
Once toasted, remove from heat and add the patties and your preferred fixings to serve.
Baking Instructions
If you prefer to bake your burgers, pre heat your oven to 425.
Place the formed patties on a cookie sheet.
You can spray it with non-cook spray or use a non-stick tray.
Bake the burgers for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches your desired level of doneness.
You can place cheese on them once they finish cooking.
Keep in mind if you bake them, they won’t have that really yummy seared, caramelized exterior.
Serving
Our simple burger recipe works well with just about any of your favorite toppings.
Some suggestions to make these burgers really pop:
- Bacon – You can bake it following this guide for a convection oven, bake them in a regular oven, or fry them on the stove top.
- Mustard
- Ketchup
- BBQ sauce
- Tomatoes, lettuce, or pickles
- Fresh onions
- Fried or sauted onions
- Sauteed mushrooms
- Melted cheese
Storing
If you have leftover burgers, you can store them in the fridge in an air tight container.
They should stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days.
If you want, you can store these simple burgers in the freezer for up to 6 months.
To reheat, allow frozen patties to thaw over night in the fridge.
To reheat, you can warm them in the microwave for a few seconds or until heated through.
You could also reheat them over medium heat on the stove top, flipping regularly so they heat evenly.
If you want to reheat in the oven, you can place them in an oven warmed to 300 degrees and warm for about 10 to 15 minutes or until warmed through.
Tips and Tricks
- You can freeze the uncooked patties if you like. To do this, make the burgers, form them into patties, and then place them in an air tight container. They should stay fresh for about 6 months. Let them to thaw overnight before following instructions to cook them.
- For some additional flavor, you can mix some shredded cheese into the burger meat.
- While you can use just about any cheese you like, we find that sliced cheese just works better for staying on top of burgers compared to shredded. Cheddar also does not melt as well as American, provolone, swiss, and some other softer varieties.
