I love mushrooms.
They are one of my favorite foods and probably my favorite vegetable (I know, they aren’t really a vegetable but we use them like one).
I’ve loved them on my pizza as long as I can remember, the little mini foodie that I was.
And you can bet I love them on burgers.
They are my topping of choice especially when you’re talking about Sauteed Mushrooms.
Cooked with garlic, balsamic, and butter, they give anything you put them on a gourmet twist- including a cheeseburger!
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
To make this mushroom burger recipe, you will need:
- Burgers or Ground Beef – The important part of this mushroom burger is not so much what burger you use as a base, but the mushroom topping. You could follow our simple burger recipe, use frozen or pre-formed patties, or your own favorite recipe. If you plan to make everything from scratch, you will want about a pound of ground beef.
- Burger Seasonings – You can follow our guide for making a delicious burger seasoning, use store bought seasonings, or keep it really simple with a little bit of salt and pepper.
- Mushrooms – You can use your favorite variety. We use about an 8 ounce package of them, sliced into roughly even slices.
- Butter – You can use butter or olive oil, but butter gives the mushrooms a richer flavor.
- White Wine – You could also use sherry which has a slightly stronger flavor, but white wine gives the mushrooms a bit of additional savoriness and flavor.
- Balsamic Vinegar – This gives the sauteed mushrooms a bit of tangy sweetness and darkens their final color.
- Garlic – You will want to use 2 to 4 (or more if you like) cloves of garlic, crushed or minced.
- Salt and Pepper – You will want to add these to your preference level. You can also omit them altogether.
- Sliced Swiss Cheese – As always, you can use whatever cheese you prefer, but swiss tends to go well with sauteed mushrooms.
- Buns – You can use your favorite variety of buns or serve over greens.
- Fixings – You will want to have on hand any of your favorite fixings for burgers. These are versatile and will work as is or you can dress them up with other flavors, like barbeque sauce.

How to Make Our Mushroom Burger Recipe
1. Prepare and cook your burger.
Prepare your burger meat by mixing it with your preferred seasonings.
Divide the burger meat into roughly even sections, and form each into patties.
We use about 1 pound of meat and make roughly 1/4 pound burgers.
When forming the patties, try to make them roughly the same thickness for even cooking.
Preheat your skillet over medium high heat.
Place the burgers on the grill pan and cook each side for a about 3 to 4 minutes before flipping.
You can cook them to your desired doneness level by increasing or decreasing the cook times on each side.
2. Sautee the mushrooms.
As the burgers are cooking, wash and slice your mushrooms into thin slices. (You can also use presliced mushrooms if you prefer).
In a small skillet, melt butter over medium heat and then add in the garlic.
Saute for about 1 to 2 minutes, and then add the mushrooms, salt, pepper, vinegar, and white wine.
Stirring frequently, saute the mushrooms until they have shrunk in size and have a dark brown glaze over them.
3. Assemble the burgers.
Reduce the heat and carefully scoop on a generous portion of mushrooms on top of each burger.
Next, add one to two slices of swiss cheese right on top.
Cover the grill pan with a lid or other heat resistant covering and allow the swiss cheese to melt down over the mushrooms and burgers.
Remove the lid, and carefully use a spatula to place each on top of waiting buns.
Serving
Sauted mushroom burgers work well on their own with no need to add anything else, but if you like, you can add whatever condiments you like.
Some suggestions include:
- sauteed onions
- fried onions
- additional cheese
- mustard
- bbq sauce
- lettuce or other greens
- toasted burger buns
Storing
If you plan to make these mushroom burgers ahead of time, prepare the burgers and mushrooms and store them seperately.
Then, when you are ready to eat, reheat the burger and mushrooms, assemble the burgers, and serve.
If you have some leftovers, make sure to store the burgers in an airtight container and place in the fridge for up to about 2 to 3 days.
To reheat, you can use your microwave, reheat in an oven set to 325 for about 10 minutes, or place on the stovetop in a covered skillet over medium low heat for about 10 minutes.
Tips and Tricks
- You can short cut this recipe a bit by using premade burger patties and sliced mushrooms.
- For added flavor, you can saute some onions to place on top of the burgers with the sauteed mushrooms.
- Cook the mushroom burgers for as long as you like. Cooking times per side generally vary between one and half to about five minutes based on how done you like your burger.
- To help melt the cheese on top, add a small splash of water to the pan before covering. This makes the pan nice and steamy, which helps the cheese to melt quickly.
