Do you use store-bought spice blends?
We use some of them, but for other things we make our own.
When we make homemade fajitas, we almost always make our own because store-bought fajita seasoning tends to be very high in sodium.
And that makes me thirsty and makes me feel generally kind of yucky.
This is a sodium free fajita seasoning recipe so you can salt it to your liking and enjoy your favorites even if you are trying to keep your sodium down.
It’s super easy to make with just a few spices you probably already have.
Plus making your own seasoning lets you customize it exactly to your heart’s desire.
Want it really spicy?
Cool- add extra cayenne.
Smoky? Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika.
After you use your homemade fajita seasoning recipe, you’ll never use store-bought again.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make our fajita seasoning recipe (don’t worry, you probably have all of them already on hand!):
- Chili Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Cumin
- Oregano
- Cayenne Pepper – Cayenne pepper adds the heat to spice blend. You can add more if you want it hotter and less if you want it milder. You could also use other hot pepper powders or crushed red pepper for heat instead.
You can add salt to the mix if you like, but we recommend adding it seperately to your recipes.
You really do not need anything special for this, but you should grab:
- small container/bowl
- fork
- measuring spoons
- spice jar
How to Make Our Fajita Seasoning Recipe
1. Measure the spices.
Use measuring spoons to scoop out the spices and place them in a small bowl.
These do not need to be perfectly even or precise.
If you want a heaping spoonful of chili powder but just about even with garlic powder, you can.
Just bear in mind, if you make big changes (like a full tablespoon more of one spice), you may change the flavor a bit more than you meant to.
2. Mix and jar.
Use a fork to mix the spices together.
If you want, you can skip the small bowl and just place them all in the spice jar, close the lid, and give it a really good shake (or two or three).
You’re done mixing when you can’t distinguish between the different spices in the jar, so really only a few quick stirs or shakes.
Pour the mixed fajita seasoning mix into a jar for storage.
If you don’t have a funnel, you can use a small piece of paper to help get the spices in.
To do this, fold the paper and then use the seam in the fold as a slide, pouring the spices onto the paper and letting slide down into the jar.
Serving
I’m just going to say this: don’t eat this as is.
Though delicious on chicken sheet pan fajitas or steak fajitas, you should not eat it with a spoon.
I can also work well on tacos or anything that you want a bit of a TexMex flavor.
Storing
If you pour the fajita seasoning into a jar, you can store them in the jar as long as it has a lid.
Otherwise, put the spice blend into a sealable container and store pretty much indefinitely in a dry location, like a spice rack.
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure your container is DRY before mixing. Otherwise, the spices can cake and not work well.
- Adjust heat using the cayenne pepper. More is spicier, less is milder. Omit for a pretty mild fajita seasoning recipe.
- This recipe makes enough seasoning for two full makes of our sheet pan chicken fajitas recipe.
