Fizzy White Apple Sangria

A light and sweet white apple sangria is the perfect drink to enjoy on a golden fall afternoon. Full of sweet apples and pears and a hint of spice, this fall sangria perfectly bridges the gap between summer cocktails and winter drinks. White Apple Sangria It’s my favorite time of year. I’ve gone full stop basic girl and I just can’t help myself. When I’m not mainlining pumpkin beverages like my life depends on it, which to be honest it probably does, I’m looking for other fall foods to enjoy. You know variety is the pumpkin spice of life after all.

And while in summer I prefer my drinks frozen and sweet, in the cooler days ahead, I prefer to set aside my frozen concoctions. No more boozy lemonade slushies or frozen pineapple mimosas or peach wine slushies until next spring. But that’s ok. Bring on all the fall sangrias like this white apple sangria. It is my absolute favorite drink to sip on in front of my lit fall tree and fireplace with Hocus Pocus or It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown playing in the background. It’s light and sweet, but filled with the crisp fall flavors of apples and pears with just a hint of cinnamon in the background. This white wine autumn sangria is definitely nice for Thanksgiving, but is the drink of choice for any of those perfect early fall days in September and the beginning of October. You know, the days when it’s warm and bright with just the hint of a fall breeze in the air before its so chilly you want slow cooker salted caramel hot chocolate or a spicy red apple cider sangria.

Red Apple Cider Sangria vs White Apple Cider Sangria

I like apple sangria made with either red or white wine, but the finished products are vastly different in my opinion. The red apple cider sangria I made can be served warm or room temperature or cold. It picks up on the spiciness of the cinnamon and feels more warming with the orange slices and notes of ginger from the splash of ginger ale. I would serve the red spiced apple cider sangria well into the winter, whenever you want a cocktail that will warm you up and make you feel cozy.

This white apple cider sangria, on the other hand, is sweeter, less spicy, and crisp. I didn’t include oranges but have pears in this sangria recipe. Orange would have hidden the subtle sweet crispness of the pears. Like the red apple cider sangria, I still included cinnamon sticks and rum. For this white fall sangria, though, instead of spiced rum, I used white rum to keep it lighter feeling and sweeter. The last change? Instead of using a splash of ginger ale for fizz and flavor as I do in the red spiced apple cider sangria, I used Sprite. You could also use seltzer or club soda- just a fizzy mixer that is lighter in taste than ginger ale to really capitalize on how refreshing this white apple sangria is.

What kind of wine should I use in white apple sangria?

You can use any white wine you like. I used Moscato since it is my favorite sweet white wine. You could also use Reisling or any other sweet white you like. A fruity dry wine like Pinot Grigio would also be a solid choice for this sangria. When you pick a wine for this, I’d look for a wine that has fruity notes to it. I’d also avoid very oaky wines. (I went wine tasting a few weeks ago and now I fancy myself an expert. Can you tell lol?)

I will drink this as my evening cocktail, but you could absolutely serve it with a wine and cheese spread. It would be delicious with this caramelized pear baked brie. This white apple sangria would also be delicious with this apple and pear fall salad. You could even use it as a brunch cocktail this time of year and serve it with a baked apple pancake. And, you could even break it out at holiday time and serve it with this cranberry orange skillet pancake or with your holiday cocktail parties.

Ingredients

  • 2 pears sliced about 1 cup
  • 2 apples sliced about 1 cup
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 cup white rum
  • 1 bottle Moscato wine 750 mL
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • splash of Sprite in each glass when served

Instructions

  • Slice up the apples and pears
  • Toss apple and pear slices in lemon juice to prevent browning. Add Moscato or another white wine, apple cider, white rum, and cinnamon stick to pitcher and stir ingredients together. Let it sit for at least an hour.
  • Pour into wine glasses and leave a little bit of room at the top. Then pour a small amount of Sprite into each glass to give it a bit of fizziness. Enjoy!

Notes

Minimum wait time is 1 hour, but I find it is best to leave it sit for longer periods of time, such as overnight.
If you don't have Moscato wine, you can try another sweet, white wine of your choice.
