Oreo s’mores.
It’s what’s for dinner for my kids any summer cookout night.
They love to have a campfire and roast marshmallows to make S’moreos.
But, it’s been so rainy here that we’ve barely been able to get outside let alone have dinner outside and a campfire.
So inside Oreo smores it is!
They don’t disappoint!
These S’moreos are everything you love about the classic treat all wrapped up in an Oreo casing.
You’ll never want to use graham crackers again!
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
To make Oreo smores, you’ll need:
- Oreos – We often use Double Stufed, but you can use regular Oreos, Mega stuffed, or some off brand sandwich cookie if you prefer for some reason or can’t find any Oreos near you.
- Chocolate – You will want to use a milk chocolate bar for smoreos. We often use Hershey’s bars, but you can use another brand if you prefer.
- Marshmallows – You will want to use large sized or the newer smore sized ones stores tend to carry around spring to fall. Small ones do not work as well.
You really do not need any kitchen equipment for Oreo smores. You just need:
How to Make Oreo Smores (Smoreos): 2 Ways
There are two ways you can make Oreo smores in the kitchen: baked and broiled.
We’ll teach you how to make them both ways.
Baking Oreo Smores
1. Preheat your oven and prep your Oreos.
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
As the oven heats, arrange 12 Oreos (…or more… or less… it really doesn’t matter how many you want to make) on a cookie sheet.
If you like, you can line the cookie sheet with either wax paper, aluminum foil, or spray it down with non-cook spray.
Once you have the Oreos on the cookie sheet, place a rectangle of Hershey’s milk chocolate on top of each Oreo.
Next, place a single large marshmallow with the flat part down on top of each Oreo and chocolate piece.
2. Bake the Oreo Smores.
Carefully place the cookie sheet into the oven.
Bake for about 3 to 5 minutes or until the marshmallow starts to brown and inflate a bit.
Carefully remove the Oreo smores from the oven.
3. Top and serve.
Immediately top each Oreo smore with a second Oreo, gently pushing the second cookie down a bit, smushing the marshmallow.
Serve immediately.
Broiling Oreo Smores
1. Preheat your broiler and assemble the Oreo smore bases.
Turn your broiler on high and set your oven rack to the second highest position.
As the broiler heats, arrange your Oreos on a broiler-safe cookie sheet.
Place a single bar of milk chocolate on top of each Oreo, and then place a single large marshmallow on top of each piece of chocolate.
2. Broil the smoreos.
Carefully put the tray of Oreo smores into the oven, watching carefully.
It will take about 30 seconds for the marshmallows to brown and start to caramalize.
Once they start to turn golden-brown, remove the tray from the oven and turn off the broiler.
3. Top and serve.
To finish the Oreo smores, place a second cookie on top of each marshmallow, pushing the marshmallow down slightly.
Serve immediately.
Can I make Oreo smores by a campfire?
Yes! We do this just about anytime we have a backyard fire.
The process is the same as for regular s’mores.
Once you roast your marshmallow over the fire, just sub in Oreo cookies for graham crackers.
This is a fun activity to do with the kids and something they all look forward to each year.
Serving
Oreo smores work best when served fresh from the oven.
They do get very messy and gooey, which is part of the overall fun of eating them.
Inevitably, as you bite into them, the marshmallow and chocolate will leak out the sides, so you will want to have wipes or other means to wash your or your kids’ hands readily available.
Storing
Once marshmallow melts and rehardens, it gets pretty tough.
You can eat them still later, and the last time we made oven baked smores, my kids ate them slowly throughout the day.
Just be warned, the marshmallow will get harder the longer it sits.
If you do want to serve them later, we recommend placing them in an air tight container.
They should stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days, though they never last longer than a day in our house, so we don’t have a good way to verify this.
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t like Oreos? You can follow the same process with just about any cookie you do like. Chocolate chip, Milanos, the golden Oreos, and so on will all work about the same as this recipe.
- If using the broiler method, watch the marshmallows closely. They can go from underdone to crispy black in seconds. About 30 to 45 seconds is often about all they need to char nicely.
- The broiler method will give you marshmallows that are more caramelized on the outside but firmer on the inside.
- If you find using two full Oreos is too much for your smores, you can remove the top off the Oreos before adding the chocolate and marshmallow. Then, after you bake or broil the Oreo smore, you use the top you removed to top each cookie.
