I love Halloween so much.
It’s the most fun time of the year.
I love romping through corn mazes and pumpkin patches, doing hayrides, trick or treating with my kids, literally all of it.
And I really love making silly Halloween treats for them.
Plus, they like to help.
And really half the reason I had kids was to do these projects with them and have a reason to make fun food crafts for Halloween.
Full disclosure: I was doing this stuff well before I had kids and I’ll do it after they’re grown too because we need some whimsy and it honestly helps me relax.
And Halloween treats like these chocolate covered Halloween pretzels are the most fun kind of food crafts to make.
There’s no need to make them look perfect since all of Halloween is a little worn, wonky, and weird so you can just enjoy the process and still have fun treats everyone will love.
Here are two ways to make these fun Halloween pretzels: using white chocolate and eyeballs to make mummy pretzels or colorful candy melts (we did orange) and candy eyes, mouths and sprinkles to make monster pretzels.
But get creative and use this method to make any kind of ooky spooky creature you and your kids want.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make spooky chocolate covered Halloween pretzels:
- Chocolate or Candy Melts– I used white chocolate for the mummy pretzels and orange candy melts for the monsters. You could use milk or semi sweet chocolate for some other variety of creature or change your monsters to purple or green.
- Coconut Oil – Coconut oil smooths and thins the melted chocolate or candy melts and also makes it slightly shiny. It also helps the candy coat the pretzels more evenly.
- Pretzels – Use mini pretzels.
- Decor – We found these really fun faces in the Halloween baking section at Target and Michaels. But you can also use much more commonly available candy eyes. You can also use other treats to make the faces like Tootsie rolls, M&Ms, or other candies to make fun designs and faces.
For decorations you can pick them up here:
You will want to get out your:
- medium glass or microwave safe bowl
- tray or cooling rack
- parchment paper
How to Make Chocolate Covered Halloween Pretzels
1. Melt the chocolate or candy melts with the coconut oil.
Pour all your chocolate chips into a medium sized bowl.
Set the bowl in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds.
Use a spoon to mix it together.
Repeat the process of 30 seconds heating followed by mixing until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
Mix in about 2 to 3 teaespoons of coconut oil.
You have enough coconut oil in the melted chocolate when it feels smooth and glossy but not thin.
2. Dip the pretzels into the melted chocolate.
Working relatively quickly, dip your pretzels into the chocolate.
You can cover them completely if you like or just the one side.
Gently shake excess chocolate off and place on parchment paper.
Work in batches of about 6 pretzels at a time.
3. Place the eyes and let them set.
Once you have all the pretzels covered with chocolate, place the faces, eye balls, or other Halloween candy to make fun designs on them.
Push them gently in so they are set somewhat into the chocolate.
For the mummy pretzels, first press in the eyeballs and then drizzle a little extra white chocolate over the dipped pretzels to make bandages.
Allow the Halloween pretzels to set for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Serve them as a snack or dessert at your next Halloween party or post trick or treating to really make sure your kids get a good sugar high.
Serving
Chocolate covered Halloween pretzels are a fun snack for that sweet and salty craving.
You can also serve them as part of a Halloween party spread as figner food or as part of dessert.
You can also use them to top different baked recipes, like brownies, cakes, or cupcakes as a bit of extra fun.
Storing
Store these homemade Halloween pretzels in an airtight container or bag on the counter for up to 2 weeks.
Don’t put them in the fridge or freezer.
Tips and Tricks
- Do not skip the coconut oil. This makes the chocolate or melted candy easier to work with, smoother, and slightly softer when it’s set.
- If you prefer, you can use a double boiler by placing your bowl over boiling water and mixing the chocolate and coconut butter until it fully melts.
- To keep the candy melted, set the bowl of melted chocolate/candy into a slightly large bowl with hot tap water.
- Work in batches when you add the eyes and decorations to the pretzels. I found doing about 6 or so at a time and working quickly kept the chocolate from setting before I could attach the decorations. If you try to dip all the pretzels first the chocolate will set before you can attach the embellishments.
- Have fun! The beauty of Halloween themed anything is they don’t have to look perfect to fit into the Halloween spirit.
