My hubs judges weddings and events by their appetizers.

If they don’t have pigs in a blanket, he thinks it is crap – even if they have the most decadent appetizers known to man.

Sigh.

Beyond weddings, pigs in a blanket are a holiday staple.

We used to buy the pre-made ones in the frozen foods aisle, but they have gotten really expensive.

Like take out a second mortgage expensive.

With holiday dinners already being somewhere between ouch and boing in cost, I’d like to save a few dollars where I can.

And this semi homemade pigs in a blanket recipe is a great way to do that.

Two ingredients and just a few minutes and they can be yours!

Ingredients for pigs in a blanket recipe: crescent dough sheet and mini hotdogs.

For our homemade pigs in a blanket recipe, you really only need two ingredients:

  • Crescent Rolls – My hubby prefers the crescent rolls, but you could also use pie crust. Pillsbury sells now crescent dough sheets, so this makes it even easier to cut out the blanket for the piggies. If you use pie crust, you can make your own following our pie crust recipe or just get a the premade ones.
  • Little Hot Dogs – We often get the Lil Smokies, but we will also cut a full length hot dog into about 3 to 4 pieces and use those instead. Sometimes you can find little hot dogs in frozen foods to skip the extra step of cutting the hot dogs.

You will also probably want to make sure you are stocked up on your typical hot dog condiments, like:

  • mustard
  • ketchup
  • relish
  • other dipping sauces, like cheese sauce or whatever floats your boat

You really don’t need any special equipment, just get out:

How to Make Pigs in a Blanket Recipe

1. Open the packaging.

Before getting started, preheat your oven according to the directions on the crescent rolls or sheets.

This is often 375, but double check because it may vary.

Open up your little hot dogs and get ready for the jump scare when you pop open the crescent roll tube.

Carefully find the end and unroll the crescent dough and lay it on a flat surface, such as a cutting board.

Don’t worry if you pull apart the seams a bit, you can push it back together later.

2. Wrap your weiners.

We use a weiner as reference point, placing it so that one end sits off the edge of the unrolled crescent dough.

You want to cut a small strip out that is just long enough to wrap the weiner once, leaving the tips exposed.

Don’t worry if you have too much or too little, this isn’t an exact science.

You can cut off excess, wrap it around a little more, or stretch the dough to make it fit.

Keep slicing strips and rolling them around the wieners until you have finished putting all your pigs in blankets.

You will have a bit of excess dough at the end that you can use to cover the wieners again or make into your own crescent roll.

3. Bake the pigs in blankets.

Place the pigs in blankets on a cookie or baking sheet, no need to spray it first.

Leave a small amount of space between each, but you won’t need much room between each.

Pop them in the oven and bake for about 10 to 12 minutes or until the dough turns golden-brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool a few minutes before serving.

Serving

Serve pigs in a blanket fresh from the oven, but allow them to cool for about 2 to 5 minutes with your favorite condiments and other appetizers.

Condiments to have on hand can include but certainly are not limited to:

  • honey mustard
  • dijion mustard
  • yellow mustard
  • brown mustard
  • ketchup
  • BBQ sauce
  • cheese sauce like this Basic Beer Cheese
  • relish
  • chili
  • sourkraut

Storing

You can store homemade pigs in a blanket in either the fridge or freezer.

In either case, allow the pigs in a blanket to cool and then place them in an airtight container before placing in the fridge or freezer.

To reheat, allow frozen dogs to thaw and reheat in the oven set to 300 degrees for about 10 minutes or until warmed through or pop them in the microwave for a few seconds.

The microwave may cause the blanket to get a bit spongy but it will hold together.

They should stay frehsh for about 3 to 5 days in the fridge and 6 months in the freezer.

Tips and Tricks

Pigs in a blanket next to mustard.

  • You will have some extra dough unless you use a lot more per hot dog. Feel free to wrap another layer on your wieners or make yourself a single mangled crescent roll. You deserve it.
  • Lil Smokies come in different flavors, so you might want to experiment with different ones until you find the right combination.
  • Our pigs in a blanket recipe is very forgiving. Make the strip to long? Wrap it a bit more. Too short, stretch the dough or add a small piece. As long as you stick to about 1 to 3 wraps around the hot dog, you can make them as pretty or ugly as you like.
  • For Halloween fun, you can follow our mummy hot dog recipe, which uses the same concepts as this pigs in a blanket recipe.
  • Both pie crust and crescent rolls work well for pigs in a blanket. You might want to steer clear of puff pastry dough, though this can also work – just leave some more space between your wieners. For a buttery pie crust, follow our recipe.
