My 5 year old loves to be in the kitchen to help cook. She says she wants to be a chef and open a pizza restaurant where they will only serve pepperoni pizza.

I am not a fan of pepperoni.

“Don’t worry, Mommy,” she tells me. “I’ll pick the pepperoni off of yours.”

Well, gee, thanks, kid.

But since she decided that her life’s calling is to be a pizza chef, I’ve been trying to come up with fun ways to get her into the kitchen with me regularly. These pumpkin patch brownies are the perfect project to do with preschool and early elementary aged kids. And they don’t require me to pick pepperoni off of anything to enjoy them.

Halloween Pumpkin Patch Brownies- Perfect for Fall!

These pumpkin patch brownies are an adorable pumpkin inspired treat for anyone who doesn’t actually like pumpkin flavor. It’s ok. I won’t judge. I married a pumpkin hater.

Because you fuss with decorating them, I’m not making homemade brownies here. I’m using box brownie mix and I’m not even hacking it the way I do with my Kahlua brownies. Nope. There is nothing fancy going on here. You can certainly use your favorite brownie recipe if you desire and have far more energy than me.

Mess Up Proof Halloween Brownies

I’m not a master cake- er- brownie decorator here. Nope, not even close. Part of why I love these pumpkin patch brownies is because you can mess them up and they will still be cute because pumpkin patches are sort of wild and unkempt. Plus, if you are a little bit of a perfectionist, you can cover up mistakes with candy and sprinkles.

Decorating Pumpkin Patch Brownies- A Brownie Decorating Tutorial

Start by letting your baked brownies cool thoroughly in the 8×8 baking dish you baked them in.

Let your brownies cool thoroughly in the baking dish

When they are nice and cool, sprinkle a mix of graham cracker and Oreo crumbs on top of them. Every pumpkin batch I’ve been in is dirty and muddy. The crumbs are a nice (and delicious!) way to replicate that.

Cover the brownies in “dirt” crumbs

Once you’ve got crumbs sprinkled on top, you can pipe your icing on. You can either make homemade buttercream- I like basic buttercream I make for my boozy pumpkin buttercream, however for these brownies, I’d omit the alcohol and add two teaspoons of vanilla- or you can use store bought buttercream, which is what I did here. To make it green, mix several drops of green food gel into the icing container and stir it until combined. I prefer the food gel over different kinds of food coloring because it will give you a more intense color.

Gel food coloring

Then scoop it out into a piping bag that you’ve got fit with a Wilton Number 3 round piping tip. I find it’s easiest to fill the piping bag if I fold it into a glass then scoop.

Fill the pastry bag by folding it into a glass and spooning the frosting in

Once you have your bag filled, just make lazy loops, swirls and lines across your brownies. Don’t make them too perfect. Think about how a pumpkin patch grows all wild. That’s what you are going for.

Pipe squiggly green icing lines on the crumb topped brownies

Then take pumpkin candies and place them evenly on top of the frosted lines. It doesn’t have to be super neat, I just like them even for best results cutting the brownies. You’re going to make everything feel a bit more pumpkin patch like in a second.

Put the pumpkins evenly on the iced brownies

Finish them off by sprinkling pumpkin sprinkles and autumn leave sprinkles on top. I’m using this autumn mix by Wilton.

This Autumn sprinkle blend by Wilton has both fall leaves and little pumpkins- sprinkle those throughout the brownies

TIP: if you feel like you’ve messed something up, just cover the smudge or whatever up with a mix of the sprinkles and graham cracker/Oreo crumb mix.

Then cut them into squares and you’ve got a fun Halloween or fall pumpkin patch brownie treat!

Other Desserts You Could Decorate With This Method

Pumpkin Patch Brownies

Not a fan of brownies? Get out.

No, just kidding. You can stay. If you aren’t a brownie fan or don’t have the ingredients for brownies, you could use this method on any square or rectangular flat treats. For example you could use:

  • Rice Krispie Treats like these amazing treats from Sally’s Baking Addiction
  • Cookie bars including my triple chocolate ones
  • Blondies like these melt in your mouth blondies from Sugar Spun Run
  • Sheet cake like my boozy pumpkin sheet cake– just sub milk for the alcohol and add 2 tsps of pumpkin spice and it will be just as delicious.
