Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make Halloween tortilla chips:
- Tortillas – You have a lot of choices here. You can use flour for a slightly softer Halloween tortilla chip or corn for a slightly crunchier version. You can also use larger wrap versions or street taco sized tortillas. You can often get more chips out of the larger tortillas, but you can sometimes squeeze out two from the smaller sizes too.
- Non-stick Spray – Spray both helps to prevent sticking and helps the salt stick to the chip. If you have an oil spritzer, you could use olive oil or whatever oil you have on hand.
- Sea Salt – You can skip this if you are trying to reduce your sodium, but otherwise, a dash of sea salt helps to bring out some added flavor.
What you need for the kitchen depends on how you plan to prepare them:
- Air Fryer
- Cookie Sheets
- Spatula
- Halloween Cookie Cutters – You will have the best luck with metal ones.
- Wire Cooling Rack
How to Make Halloween Tortilla Chips
Here’s how to shape and season your Halloween tortilla chips (see below for baking and air fryer instructions):
1. Pick out your tortillas.
You can choose whatever tortillas you like to make the chips.
Corn ones have a crispier texture, while the flour ones create a slightly softer texture.
Corn also gets a bit harder the longer they sit, while flour tend to hold up a bit better.
Also, you should consider the size of the tortillas.
Larger tortillas, like ones for wraps, will let you make more chips per tortilla compared to the smaller ones.
But the end result of using large or small is the exact same.
2. Cut out the shapes.
Lay a single tortilla on a flat surface or cutting board.
Position the Halloween cookie cutter near the edge and press down firmly.
Carefully remove the cookie cutter and tortilla shape, and continue to make cuts using the same or different shaped cookie cutters, using as much of the tortilla as possible.
Repeat until you have created as many Halloween tortilla chips as you need.
How to Make Halloween Tortilla Chips – Air Fryer
Set your air fryer based on the chip: 350 for flour and 375 for corn.
Once it’s ready, place the chips in the basket of the air fryer so they aren’t touching or overlapping.
Give them a spritz with non-stick spray or oil and then sprinkle with salt.
Cook for 7 to 8 minutes for flour and 6 minutes for corn, flipping the chips midway through the cooking process.
When you flip them, you can spray the bottoms with more spray and add a bit more salt.
The chips are done when they start to turn golden brown.
Cool and repeat until done, placing cooked chips on a cooling rack until done.

How to Make Halloween Tortilla Chips – Oven
Preheat your oven to 425 for flour and 400 for corn.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil (optional) and spray it with nonstick spray.
Arrange the chips so they aren’t touching or overlapping and spray the tops with the non-stick spray.
Sprinkle on sea salt and then place in the oven and bake for 4 minutes to 5 minutes for flour and 16 minutes for corn.
For corn, you will want to flip halfway through baking them.
The chips are done when they start to turn golden brown.
Carefully remove the tray from the oven and transfer to a wire cooling rack.
Repeat as needed until you have baked all the chips you want.

- Tomato Salsa Recipe
- Easy Jalapeno Popper Dip
- Beer Cheese Queso
- Pineapple Mango Salsa
Storing
You can make Halloween tortilla chips a few days a head of time.
Keep in mind, corn chips tend to get harder over time while flour ones tend to get softer.
Before storing, allow them to cool completely to help prevent condensation.
To store, place finished and cooled chips in an air tight container.
They should stay fresh for about a week.
If you find they have softened a bit much, you can reheat them in the oven for one to two minutes at 350 to help the chips firm up again.
Tips and Tricks
Homemade Halloween tortilla chips are pretty easy to make, but these tips may help if you run into any issues:
- Ovens and air friers can vary some in how hot they get and how they cook the food. The times are estimates based on about how long it takes. It may take more or less time to fully cook the chips. They are done when they start to turn golden brown all around with some browning on the edges.
- You can add a bit more flavor to the chips if you like using spices and seasoning mixes. Lime spices, chili, and other southwest seasonings can all add extra flavor. You can add these before baking or air frying. You may want to avoid garlic powder, at least by itself, since this can burn easily in the oven and create an unpleasant flavor.
- If you have trouble cutting out the shapes, use a sharp knife to help cut out any stuck chips. Metal cutters tend to work better than the plastic ones.
- It helps to use fresher tortillas rather than the ones that have been sitting in your pantry for a month. Ask me how I know 😉
- Wiggling the cookie cutter back and forth while pressing down on it firmly will release the chip from the rest of the tortilla.
