I enjoy a nice glass of sangria when the weather is nice.
You bougie tastes and all that, despite definitely not having a bougie budget.
This strawberry sangria is budget bougie done right.
Sommeliers, this post is not for you.
Those of you that applaud the Brooklyn 99 crew showing up at a dinner party with the most 8-ish dollar bottle of wine they could find: this is for you!
Similarly if you find yourself thinking that you may appreciate Herb Ertlinger’s fruit wine.
My hubs came out with the most 6ish dollar bottle of wine he could find and he was suitably impressed with himself because, prior to this find, he could only find 9ish dollar bottles.
And friends, let me tell you, after tasting the sweet slightly fizzy goodness that is this strawberry sangria, I never would have known that this fancy feeling drink was made with less fancy wine.
Truthfully, I probably would not have known the wine wasn’t fancy anyway.
The moral of the story is: you don’t have to overspend on wine to impress to make a strawberry sangria that is simply sweet and lovely.
Ingredients and Kitchen Supplies
Here’s what you need to make strawberry sangria:
- Strawberries – We strongly recommend using fresh strawberries, but frozen, thawed berries could work too. If you plan to make your own strawberry simple syrup, you’ll need enough to put into your pitcher and enough to make the syrup or about a pint and a cup.
- White Wine – No need to
- Rum – Let’s just say, we elder millennials used Bacardi like it was our birthday. Seriously though, you can use any white rum you like. You may want to avoid spiced rums because it may alter the flavor a bit.
- Strawberry Simple Syrup – You can follow our strawberry simple syrup recipe or make your own if you know how. You will need equal portions of strawberries, sugar, and water for this.
- Sprite – You could use generic lime-lemon cola or whatever the kids are calling it these days. It adds a bit of sweetness, citrus flavor, and sparkles to each glass of strawberry sangria. You can skip the cola altogether and use seltzer or club soda or nothing at all in its place if you don’t like bubbles, you monster.
You do not need any fancy equipment for strawberry sangria, but you may find these tools useful:
- pitcher
- sharp knife
- cutting board
- wooden spoon
- whisk and small pot (if making your own strawberry simple syrup)
How to Make Strawberry Simple Syrup
1. Prepare the simple syrup.
Wash and remove the stems from your strawberries.
Quarter about 1 cup of them for the simple syrup.
You will need to combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar in a small pot, heating over medium-low heat and whisking non-stop until the sugar dissovles.
When the sugar is fully dissolved, add about 1 cup of quartered strawberries to the pot.
You’ll cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the strawberries start to come apart and release their juices into the sugar and water blend.
It takes about 2 minutes to dissolve the sugar and another 10 to cook the strawberries.
Finally, strain the simple syrup into a mason jar or measuring cup and allow to cool slightly.
You can discard the strawberry mush.
For more details, you can follow our strawberry simple syrup recipe here.
2. Prepare the strawberries for the sangria.
Take the remaining pint of strawberries and wash and take the stems off if you have not done this already.
We sliced them up and down into oblong slices to make them look pretty in the pitcher.
You can slice them into rounds or do some weird as rough chop of the strawberries. Your choice.
You can go ahead and add them to the pitcher now or wait until the end (like we did in our video) and watch the sangria go splish splash.
Pro tip: Add the strawberries to the pitcher first, avoid the splash!
3. Combine, rest, serve.
Once your simple syrup and strawberries are ready to go, pour the strawberry simple syrup, rum, and white wine into the pitcher with the strawberries.
Use a large spoon to give it a quick stir.
Cover or close you pitcher and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
The longer it sits, the more the flavors will come together, so you can let it sit overnight if you plan to serve it the next day.
Once it has rested, serve by pouring into wine or other glasses with ice if desired, filling each about 3/4s to almost full.
Fill the remainder of the glass with Sprite or other sparkling, lemon-lime soda.
You can garnish each glass with lemon wedges or wheels, sugar, and strawberries.
Serving
You can serve strawberry sangria anytime after it has rested for at least a half hour.
To make it look pretty, we will rim the glasses with sugar.
To do this, cut a strawberry in half and rub around the rim of the glasses.
Place the top of the glass into a shallow bowl of granulated sugar to created a frosted look to the glass.
You can also slice some lemon wedges or create wheels to decorate the outside as well.
You can also place more strawberries into the glass or attach them to the edge of the glasses.
If you are looking for a strawberry themed brunch, try pairing it with strawberry crumble.
Storing
You can keep strawberry sangria fresh for about 5 to 7 days in the fridge.
You should use an airtight container to store it.
You can serve it directly from the fridge, no need for any special preparation if you do not want.
Tips and Tricks
- Add the sliced strawberries to the pitcher first to avoid splashing the wine and rum everywhere.
- Do not add the Sprite to the pitcher. You want to add that right before serving to each glass so it doesn’t go flat.
- Freshly picked or farmstand strawberries often have the best flavor compared to grocery store strawberries, but both kinds will work well.
- You can skip the Sprite or use your preferred lemon lime soda if you prefer. Seltzer water can also add some sparkle.
